Indeed, Super Play ranks right there with the all-time magazine greats. They were just so passionate.

FWIW, my all-time favorite is Sega Saturn Magazine. That one tops even Super Play IMHO.

One of the all-time great video game magazines.

I would also highly recommend Mean Machines too if you haven’t tried it yet (the original 24 issues before it split off into Nintendo Magazine System and Mean Machines Sega).

Sup Dale! Hope all is well. Gah, I feel bad for falling behind so much on replying to comments that have been left on RVGFanatic. A lot of things going on… work being nuts as usual, the girlfriend moving in and so forth. Anyway, always good to hear from you and I did click on the link you shared. Wow. Sad news, man! I remember Jason Brookes indeed. Way too young to pass. My condolences to his family and friends. He contributed so much to a magazine that so many of us loved and still love to this day. I still have all 49 issues (the 47 + Gold + 2017 reunion issue for the Classic SNES Edition launch special) and I doubt I will ever sell them. Too precious to ever let go. Rest In Peace Jason Brookes.

I remember years ago when I played Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja where in the options screens the word “Shuriken” was written as “Syuriken”, to which I though “Huh, I guess ‘sh’ and ‘sy’ are interchangeable in this regard as they’re pronounced the same.” I figured maybe it would been the same for “Shōnen” or “Syonen” for Shōnen Ashibe, and when I looked it up on Wikipedia and eBay it was spelled with “Sh”, though it might not be wrong to spell it with a “Sy” (guess it depends on how you view it). But if I *am* wrong about that then I am terribly sorry =(

And as far as DoReMi Fantasy having the superior Aurora Borealis of the two, agreed! =D The subtlety, the color choices, the detail, absolutely breathtaking

Thanks Star. Yeah, it was a crazy nine month journey. In hindsight I’m glad it worked out like it did because it gave me one hell of a tale to tell… but at the same time I’m glad that level of stress was a one time thing. This gaming hobby of ours after all should not induce stress but if anything relieve it, lol.

Ah, is it Shounen Ashibe? I always thought it was Syonen — I’ll have to change that going forward. You’re right, decent little cutesy platformer but nothing special. I do like the Northern Lights in that game though… the version that appears in DoReMi looks prettier, though.

If I recall correctly I first heard of Super Play on your RVGFanatic website when I first stumbled upon it almost eight years ago, but I do know for a fact I first found out about Shōnen Ashibe that way (since you brought it up; especially that side by side comparison shot of its Aurora Borealis with that of DoReMi Fantasy); and my curiosity for it led to me importing it three years ago (my twelfth Super Famicart). I like Shōnen Ashibe, it’s a fun feel-good Super Famiplatformer; not much in terms of difficulty, sure, but charming fun while it lasts =)
