Glad the article brought back some fond memories for you, Gary. The Saturn holds a special #2 in my heart (although the Switch is making a strong case). There will always be something very special about the Sega Saturn, and the magazine. Those were some bloody fun times.

Man, you said it best right there. Yup, the lack of shmups was a bit shocking. But overall, a fairly solid list. No one is going to agree 100% with any top list, and that’s what makes them fun (IMHO) to peruse. The golden age of gaming journalism… ah, those words have a certain ring to them that is so rich and beautiful. The industry has come a long way in many ways, but we’ll never get that fun and beautiful gaming journalism of the ’90s back ever again. A time capsule sort of thing, for sure.

Thanks for posting this list. I regrettably don’t have my Sega Saturn Magazine collection any more, it was one of those things I had to give up when moving to a smaller place and this has brought back so many good memories. I still have my Christmas Nights cover disc.

One thing I think gets over looked on the Saturn is just how good the CD Player is. It’s genuinely the reason my Saturn is the only console I keep hooked up these days.

What a wonderful list! You’re right, these fine people really were passionate Sega fans.

One thing I find strange and interesting is the complete lack of 2D shmups, especially considering the fact that the Saturn is well known for its awesome and massive library of shmups.

Maybe it’s because a lot of them were Japanese exclusive, but still a little jarring.

But at the end of the day, this was a great article from the golden age of gaming journalism. I miss magazines and websites from back in the day, so it’s great that wonderful websites like this still exist.

Thank you Dale. Whoa, sorry for the super late reply. I meant to update more frequently but man, the reading bug has bitten me super hard lately. It took me 3 weeks to finish reading It (all 1,153 pages). Anyway, what great timing with your Saturn article in early April. I took a look, cool stuff! I like the personal picture that you shared. It’s always cool seeing gaming group pictures like that. Really brings you back. Yup, the Saturn turned 25 earlier this month in the US. Makes me feel even older than I already am, lol.

Wow, that was a fun rundown of the Saturn’s best. Never was aware of this UK publication until your blog. I missed out on the Saturn for most of its lifespan, but had a few memorable weekend sessions of it with friends over the years. Now that the Saturn’s 25th North American launch anniversary is coming up in a few weeks what would you say are your own top ranked Saturn games all these years later?
